The app stores your patterns and progress on your device. Some features send small amounts of data to third parties — AI tools talk to Anthropic, feedback forms talk to a server we run, and ads (for free users) involve Google AdMob. We do not sell your data. You can ask us to delete anything we hold about you.
For privacy questions or data deletion requests:
The app stores the following locally, in iOS UserDefaults and SwiftData on your iPhone or iPad. None of it is sent to us. It's deleted when you delete the app.
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Profile preferences | Display name, daily-goal minutes, preferred hook size, body size preferences, units |
| Onboarding answers | Skill level, interests, goals, notification opt-in |
| Crochet content | Saved patterns, in-progress projects, session timestamps, row counts, notes, project photos, yarn-stash entries |
| AI history | Chat history, saved tips, stitch lookups, pattern-generator results |
| App state | Recently viewed, search history, achievements, XP, streak |
| Notification prefs | Per-category opt-ins, quiet hours, push history |
You can wipe all of this at any time: Settings → Danger Zone → Reset All Data.
When you use the AI Pattern Generator, Pattern Scanner, Stitch Explainer, Yarn Substitution, Pattern Error Checker, or Crochet Chat, the text or image you provide is sent through our server to Anthropic (the makers of Claude, the AI model used).
| Sent | When |
|---|---|
| Your prompts and messages | Each AI tool invocation |
| Photos you choose to upload | Pattern Scanner, Crochet Chat attachments, Yarn Label scan |
| Header metadata | App version, device model, iOS version |
We do not store these requests on our servers — they pass through a Firebase Cloud Function that forwards to Anthropic and returns the result. Anthropic's own privacy policy applies to how they process the data: anthropic.com/legal/privacy. Anthropic states that API requests are not used to train their models.
When you submit the Send Feedback or Contact Support form in Settings:
| Sent | When |
|---|---|
| Form contents | Mood, category, message (Feedback) — or name, email, topic, message (Contact) |
| Optional identity fields | First name, last name, email, gender — only when you flip "Share who I am" off-anonymous on the Feedback form |
| Header metadata | App version, build, device model, iOS version, locale |
| Your IP address | Logged briefly for rate-limiting |
This data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore (feedback/ and contact/ collections in our Firebase project) and a notification email is sent to us via Resend. We keep submissions indefinitely so we can follow up on issues, unless you ask us to delete them.
If you submit the Feedback form anonymously (the default), we do not record any name, email, or gender. You can opt to share those fields if you want a reply.
Free users see banner, interstitial, and app-open ads served by Google AdMob. Pro subscribers see no ads — and AdMob is not initialised for them. When ads are active:
We do not see or store IDFA or location ourselves. AdMob handles it directly.
Yarn UP offers Pro on three subscription plans: Weekly, Monthly, and Annual. New subscribers receive a 3-day free trial the first time they subscribe. The transaction is handled by Apple via StoreKit — we see only the receipt indicating Pro entitlement is active, we never see your payment details.

| Photo Library | Selecting reference photos in AI tools, project cover photos |

Yarn UP is rated 4+ on the App Store. The app is suitable for all ages, but we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The Feedback and Contact forms are not designed for use by children. If you believe a child has submitted personal data, write to us and we will delete it promptly.
