Yarn UP

Privacy Policy

Effective date: 2026-06-01 Last updated: 2026-06-01
Plain-English summary

The app stores your patterns and progress on your device. Some features send small amounts of data to third parties — AI tools talk to Anthropic, feedback forms talk to a server we run, and ads (for free users) involve Google AdMob. We do not sell your data. You can ask us to delete anything we hold about you.

1. Who we are

For privacy questions or data deletion requests:

2. What we collect, why, and how long

2.1 Stored only on your device

The app stores the following locally, in iOS UserDefaults and SwiftData on your iPhone or iPad. None of it is sent to us. It's deleted when you delete the app.

CategoryExamples
Profile preferencesDisplay name, daily-goal minutes, preferred hook size, body size preferences, units
Onboarding answersSkill level, interests, goals, notification opt-in
Crochet contentSaved patterns, in-progress projects, session timestamps, row counts, notes, project photos, yarn-stash entries
AI historyChat history, saved tips, stitch lookups, pattern-generator results
App stateRecently viewed, search history, achievements, XP, streak
Notification prefsPer-category opt-ins, quiet hours, push history

You can wipe all of this at any time: Settings → Danger Zone → Reset All Data.

2.2 Sent to AI services (when you use AI features)

When you use the AI Pattern Generator, Pattern Scanner, Stitch Explainer, Yarn Substitution, Pattern Error Checker, or Crochet Chat, the text or image you provide is sent through our server to Anthropic (the makers of Claude, the AI model used).

SentWhen
Your prompts and messagesEach AI tool invocation
Photos you choose to uploadPattern Scanner, Crochet Chat attachments, Yarn Label scan
Header metadataApp version, device model, iOS version

We do not store these requests on our servers — they pass through a Firebase Cloud Function that forwards to Anthropic and returns the result. Anthropic's own privacy policy applies to how they process the data: anthropic.com/legal/privacy. Anthropic states that API requests are not used to train their models.

2.3 Sent to feedback / support services (when you use the forms)

When you submit the Send Feedback or Contact Support form in Settings:

SentWhen
Form contentsMood, category, message (Feedback) — or name, email, topic, message (Contact)
Optional identity fieldsFirst name, last name, email, gender — only when you flip "Share who I am" off-anonymous on the Feedback form
Header metadataApp version, build, device model, iOS version, locale
Your IP addressLogged briefly for rate-limiting

This data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore (feedback/ and contact/ collections in our Firebase project) and a notification email is sent to us via Resend. We keep submissions indefinitely so we can follow up on issues, unless you ask us to delete them.

If you submit the Feedback form anonymously (the default), we do not record any name, email, or gender. You can opt to share those fields if you want a reply.

2.4 Advertising (free users only)

Free users see banner, interstitial, and app-open ads served by Google AdMob. Pro subscribers see no ads — and AdMob is not initialised for them. When ads are active:

We do not see or store IDFA or location ourselves. AdMob handles it directly.

2.5 Subscriptions & free trial

Yarn UP offers Pro on three subscription plans: Weekly, Monthly, and Annual. New subscribers receive a 3-day free trial the first time they subscribe. The transaction is handled by Apple via StoreKit — we see only the receipt indicating Pro entitlement is active, we never see your payment details.

2.6 Permissions we request

The app may ask iOS for permission to use these features. You can always deny or revoke them from iOS Settings → Yarn UP. The app functions without any of these granted — denied permissions only disable the specific feature that needs them.
